What it is
An eye that cannot close completely is known as Lagophthalmos. Facial palsy is a common cause, while scarring from injury or burns, a sunken eye and certain neurological conditions may also contribute.
When the cornea remains exposed, the eye can become dry, red, watery or uncomfortable. At Dr. Priti Eye Aesthetics, treatment considers both eye function and facial aesthetics, helping protect the cornea while restoring a more natural, balanced appearance.
The treatment
Treatment usually begins with generous use of lubricating eye drops and gels, which may be enough to keep the eye surface protected and comfortable.
When vision is at risk, treatment is tailored to the underlying cause. Options may include scar revision, skin grafting, placement of a gold weight in the upper eyelid to improve closure, lower eyelid support with a graft, tightening of the outer eyelid corner, or carefully reducing the action of the muscle that lifts the upper lid.
OnabotulinumtoxinA may provide benefit for around three to six months, while selected filler treatments can last up to fifteen months and may also support a more balanced eye aesthetics outcome.

Skin grafts and eyelid procedures typically take around six weeks to heal, with sutures removed after seven to ten days.
A skin graft may require a further three to six months to fully settle, allowing the colour, texture, and contour to blend naturally with the surrounding skin.
