Treatment
A blind eye that has become white, shrunken or painful, restored with a custom prosthesis.
What it is
An eye with no prospect of visual recovery may gradually become white, shrink, and sink, with episodes of redness, pain, and watering.
The impact can be psychological as well as physical, with treatment focused on improving both comfort and appearance.
The treatment
If the eyeball has not significantly shrunk and there is no severe enophthalmos or disfigurement, a cosmetic contact lens may be considered as an initial option.
If surgical treatment is required, evisceration with an orbital implant can create a stable foundation for an artificial eye. Where the socket has contracted, a dermal fat graft can restore volume and improve the overall orbital contour.

A clear conformer remains in place for approximately six weeks while the socket heals, during which the eye may appear partially closed.
The prosthesis is then custom-fitted and precisely matched to the other eye, achieving an excellent natural-looking cosmetic result. Most patients can resume normal activities throughout recovery, while allowing adequate time before a major social occasion.
