What it is
Bulging, or proptosed, eyes are often associated with Thyroid Eye Disease, though high myopia or a naturally shallow eye socket can also cause the eyes to appear more prominent.
Beyond appearance, proptosis can make glasses difficult to fit and may leave more of the eye surface exposed, leading to dryness, irritation and discomfort that may require specialist oculoplastic assessment.
The procedure
Orbital decompression surgery is performed under general anaesthesia, removing carefully selected bone and fat from behind the eye to create more space within the socket and allow the eye to sit in a more natural position.
The procedure is carried out through discreet, hidden incisions in the upper eyelid crease, inner corner of the eye and inside the lower eyelid. Advanced navigation guidance and specialised instruments support the precision and safety expected in complex Oculoplastic Surgery.

The bulk of the recovery happens within twenty to thirty days, with mild to moderate discomfort in the first week, managed with pain relief.
Once thyroid eye disease has reached its inactive phase the bulge will not settle by itself. Surgery is what corrects it, and the correction is permanent.
